Kandy City, declared as a world heritage metropolis by UNESCO in 1988, is managed by Kandy municipality with the assistance of several government departments and private sector, and in terms of world heritage, several projects have been undertaken until 2003.
1. Buildings over 100 years in the town, together with areas of archaeological values are being identified and protected.
2. Basic work to preserve the old royal bathing fountain, is underway.
3. Places and Buildings of historical significance in Kandy are being photographed and allied information scheduled.
Development.
Action is being taken to enlist houses and buildings required to be demolished to facilitate expansion of Colombo - Kandy high road.
World heritage foundation has got acts and ordinances approved, for preservation of properties of historic and cultural significance. |

Beautification of the city.
There are 4 main entrances to Kandy City. Viz:
Wiliam Gopallawa Mawatha
Peradeniya Road
Katugastota Road
Tennakumbura Road
Dual sides of these entrance roods are being beautified.
Publicity
1. Maintenance of a website with information and photographs of Kandy City is being done.
2. Two manuals comprising of information and maps of Kandy city are being compiled.
3. A text book captioned 'World Heritage City' of Kandy has been printed.
4. On completion of 300 years to the twin cities of Chengdy and Kandy, 1000 text books will be printed out in commemoration.
Friendly Alliance with world Heritage Cities.
A friendly alliance was signed in Changdy of China between Kandy and Chengdy.
